Being a nanny in the United States can be a very rewarding experience for many people looking for an adventure abroad. But how much do you know about the world of childcare? Here, we cover many things you should keep in mind if you are planning to travel to the United States and work as a nanny.

‍

How much does a nanny earn in the United States?

Nanny work is one of the most in-demand jobs worldwide. In families where parents must leave home every day for work, or who have many children, nannies are a great help in the care and maintenance of their children and the home.

In the United States, nannies can find work privately or through an agency dedicated to recruiting young people for family care. The nanny's salary will depend heavily on this.

Another very important factor to consider when talking about this job is the number of working hours, as well as the number of children to care for. A person might work a few hours a day and then head to another family to do the same, or they might live with the family and dedicate themselves full-time to caring for their children.

With all this in mind, the average hourly wage for a nanny ranges between $18 and $22. This totals between $30,000 and $42,000 per year. This salary may be more or less sufficient for the employee depending on their working conditions, the state in which they live, and their expenses.

What is it like to work as a nanny in the United States?

As we mentioned earlier, a nanny's work depends heavily on the number of hours they work, the number of children they have to care for, and many other factors that the family may require or request.

However, in general terms, the job may include the following tasks:

  • Supervising and ensuring the safety of the children,
  • Preparing meals,
  • Ensuring the cleanliness and order of their spaces,
  • Changing diapers,
  • Accompanying and supervising schoolwork,
  • Accompanying them to extracurricular activities,
  • Playing games that stimulate cognitive development.

Program for working as a nanny in the United States

To work as a nanny in the United States, there are some programs that facilitate finding a family and obtaining a work visa. The best-known program is the famous Au Pair program, which is an exchange experience. With this program, young people can live with a family while caring for their children.

On the other hand, there are platforms that have established themselves in the world of searching for childcare providers or nannies. The best-known are Sittercity, UrbanSitter, Nextdoor, and Care. They all function similarly to other job search platforms, but they focus primarily on nanny and caregiver work.

‍

What does it take to be a nanny?

In principle, families often look for young caregivers who do not have children or other dependents, so they can dedicate themselves 100% to the care of a single family. This is why programs like Au Pair require applicants to be between 18 and 26 years old.

Other requirements that may be requested of nannies include having an intermediate level of English, in order to communicate and understand the children. Additionally, they may ask for **previous experience** in the childcare field.

Finally, other requirements are having completed secondary education and having a driver's license.

On the other hand, families might have their own needs outside of programs and applications. It is recommended to consult with the company or the family beforehand to avoid misunderstandings.
