A check is a type of payment order that serves as a written record of a payment. It is signed by the bank account holder and made out to a beneficiary.

The steps to fill out a check are quite simple, though you will need some information to complete it. Keep in mind that there are several factors you must consider to ensure your check is valid and can be cashed.

‍

How to fill out a check: A step-by-step guide

Here is a step-by-step guide to filling out a check correctly. Please note that your checkbook must be provided by the bank or institution where you hold a funded bank account.

Also, remember that if you want to send remittances with Félix, you can pay with a U.S.-issued debit or credit card (except American Express) or in cash at participating stores. Checks and bank transfers are not accepted.

Step 1

Fill in the date: first the day, then the month (both day and month should be written with two digits), and finally the year (written with four digits).

Step 2

If it is a “bearer” check, you will need to fill the space with that designation. Otherwise, you must fill it in with the full name and surname of the check recipient. Fill any remaining space on the line with a straight line.

Step 3

You must fill in the spaces for the amount in 2 ways: there is a space to enter the amount in numbers, and a line to enter the amount in words. Both amounts must match. Fill the remaining space with a line so that no one else can add other figures.

Step 4

Sign the check.

Step 5

Endorse the check. On the back, there is a space designated for the endorsement. You will need to fill the first space with the title “Endorsement in property.” In the next space, sign it, and finally, fill in the name, address, phone number, and signature of the check beneficiary.

Who is the person that should fill out a check?

The person who must fill out the check should be the bank account holder from which the check amount will be deducted. This person is also known as the “drawer.”

Sometimes, the bank may also issue and sign a check to a third party.

‍

What are the 7 types of checks?

Checks have different characteristics, and based on these, they can be classified under different names. These are:

  • Bearer check: a check where no name is indicated. The beneficiary can present it at the bank and cash it.
  • Personalized check: unlike the previous one, this type of check does bear the name of the person authorized to cash it.
  • Crossed: a check marked with two parallel lines across one of its edges, indicating that it cannot be cashed at a teller window and must be deposited into a bank account.
  • Non-negotiable: these checks cannot be endorsed to third parties, meaning they must be cashed exclusively by the beneficiary to whom they were issued.
  • Certified or guaranteed: bears a signature or stamp from the bank, guaranteeing that there are sufficient funds in the drawer's account to cover the check.
  • Traveler's: issued in foreign currency for use as a payment method abroad. You do not need a bank account to obtain them; you can simply purchase them for an amount equivalent to their face value.
  • Banker's: in this case, the issuer of the check is the bank itself, which will sign and pay the check.
