Traveling to the United States is an incredible option, as the country offers a wealth of possibilities for tourists, workers, and students.
However, when entering through any of its borders, there are a series of requirements to keep in mind to avoid issues with customs officers.
How much cash can I bring into the United States?
According to the U.S. government, the most important thing to keep in mind when considering how much money to travel with is the following: if you are carrying more than $10,000 in cash or other monetary instruments, you must declare or report it to customs before entering or leaving the country.
Taking into account the maximum amount you can carry without declaring, you must also consider the minimum required to enter the United States. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, **travelers must demonstrate that they have the necessary funds to cover their entire stay in the country.**
These funds can be proven through cash, traveler's checks, credit cards, among others. Although there is no exact figure that stipulates the minimum amount of funds required to travel, Customs officials may ask the traveler to demonstrate at least $2,000 upon entry.
What else is mandatory to declare when entering the United States?
Entry policies for the United States are very strict, so it is recommended to have the following documents close at hand to present to customs officers:
- Passport and Visa: you cannot enter the country without a visa approved by the U.S. government,
- Round-trip tickets: it is essential to present your return flight to show that you do not plan to stay indefinitely or illegally,
- Accommodation reservation: you must show that you have a reservation at a hotel or proof from an acquaintance or family member who will be hosting you,
- Medical insurance: purchasing travel assistance is very important to prevent misfortunes.
What happens if I bring more cash than allowed into the United States?
If you are bringing more than $10,000 on your trip to the U.S., you must declare it to Customs. You will need to complete the Customs Declaration Form and the questionnaire from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). You must do the same if you plan to leave the U.S. with more than $10,000.
What items can I carry in my luggage to enter the United States?
When traveling, there are basic items we all need to pack. Official documentation, money, and toiletries are included in the permitted items. However, the size, format, and quantity of toiletries should be checked on the airline's website.
On the other hand, Customs has compiled a list of **prohibited items** that cannot be carried in luggage because they may pose a risk to public health, the local flora and fauna, and public safety.
This list includes food products, such as:
- Wild game meat or any product containing meat derivatives,
- Milk, poultry, eggs, and derivatives,
- Pork and derivatives,
- It is advised against bringing rice, fruits, and vegetables.
Regarding alcoholic beverages, each state has its own limitations, so it is recommended to check before entering with a prohibited quantity of beverages.
