Understanding how retirement works in the country you wish to immigrate to is key to starting a savings plan and securing a future where you can enjoy the fruits of your labor without having to worry about a thing.
In the United States, the retirement system has its own unique features, and knowing them will benefit you as both a contributor and a future beneficiary of the program.
What is retirement like in the United States?
As in most countries, retirement in the United States is a right accessed after a certain number of years of work and contributions to the system.
The U.S. retirement system is made up of various types of income, including those derived from **public and private contributions**. To be eligible for retirement benefits, workers must be between **62 and 70 years old.**
Along with retirement income, citizens must also choose a health coverage plan. Under the U.S. system, upon turning 65, retirees must enroll in one of the Medicare programs, keeping in mind that late enrollment is subject to a penalty.
The role of Social Security in retirement
The Social Security system consists of a trust fund financed through Social Security tax payments. This system also provides for disability pensions, survivor benefits for family members of a deceased person, and supplemental income for those with limited resources.
In general, retirees and pensioners receive 40% of the income they earned prior to retirement.
However, workers must also contribute to other retirement or private savings tools to receive a higher income that allows them to maintain their standard of living. This is why there is so much emphasis on retirement planning, such as retirement plans or an Individual Retirement Account (IRA).
Sources of income for retirees
According to some research centers, such as the Pew Research Center, at least 20% of Americans over 65 choose to keep working. This is why they can maintain their income even after reaching retirement age.
Many people, however, also consider what is known as semi-retirement. This option allows them to remain active without working the full hours of a standard employee.
On the other hand, we have also mentioned the Individual Retirement Account (IRA). There are two types of IRAs: the **traditional** account, which features tax deductions and is subject to taxes upon withdrawal, and the Roth account, whose withdrawals are tax-free.
Finally, you can also access employer-sponsored retirement plans. These can be of three types:
- defined benefit plans,
- defined contribution plans,
- hybrid plans.
Social Security and the Social Security Administration (SSA)
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is the agency that manages the national social security program and assigns an identification number to every person who enters the program, whether through retirement, disability, or other benefits.
Along with the number, the SSA also issues a card that serves as an identification card for the program beneficiary.
How does Social Security work?
Once you reach 62 years of age, you can apply for Social Security through the Social Security Administration (SSA) website or offices. However, if you wait until your full retirement age of 65, you could receive an even higher income.
To apply for this benefit, you must have worked for at least 10 years. The system works through credits that you accumulate by working and paying Social Security taxes. You earn 4 credits per year, with a minimum of 40 credits (10 years) required.
Financial planning tools
To help plan personal finances and future retirement, the U.S. government provides a tool called a Worksheet. On these sheets, you can record all information regarding your income, expenses, savings goals, and more.
With this information, you can begin planning your savings by choosing the retirement plan or insurance that best suits your needs.
Calculating Retirement Income
To start calculating retirement income, you must consider several factors, such as the age at which you begin receiving these benefits or the earnings you received throughout your life.
The U.S. government offers a variety of Social Security benefit or credit calculators, which take into account personal income, credits earned over years of work, and income limits, among other factors.
