Most people sending money to Mexico from the U.S. think the only limit is the one set by the service they use. In reality, there are three distinct layers that determine how much you can send: FinCEN reporting thresholds in the U.S., the limits the Mexican SAT applies to those receiving money from abroad, and the rules of the service you use based on your verification level.

There is no legal limit for sending remittances from the U.S. to Mexico. What exists are reporting thresholds: above certain amounts, the service is required to verify your identity or notify the authorities. Meeting these requirements is simple and does not affect your legitimate transfers.

‍

How much money can be sent to Mexico without declaring it to FinCEN?

FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network) is the U.S. Treasury agency that regulates money transfers. Its rules apply to all authorized remittance services operating in the U.S., regardless of the destination country.

There are two thresholds you should know about:

Identity verification starting at $3,000 USD: Any transfer of $3,000 USD or more in a single transaction requires the service to verify your identity with an official document. Verifying yourself in advance removes this barrier for each individual transfer.

Transaction reporting starting at $10,000 USD: Transactions exceeding $10,000 USD must be automatically reported to the authorities. This also applies if you make several transactions on the same day that total more than $10,000 USD (known as "structuring"). It is a service obligation, not a penalty for the user: your legitimate transfers will have no issues as long as they do not exceed the applicable limits.

How much can a person in Mexico receive without reporting it to the SAT?

In the case of Mexico, the Tax Administration Service (SAT) requires banks to report when a person receives more than the equivalent of $10,000 USD in international transfers in a calendar month. That report does not automatically imply a tax charge, but it can trigger a review if the amount does not correspond to the beneficiary's tax profile.

Receiving family remittances is not subject to income tax in Mexico, provided they are transfers between family members and are not income for services or work. However, the SAT may request documentation if the amounts are high and there is no tax relationship to justify them. Other destination countries have their own reporting rules; in each case, it is the receiving financial institution that assumes that obligation.

Receiving family remittances in Mexico is not subject to income tax. The SAT may request documentation if the amounts are high, but the simple act of receiving money from a family member in the U.S. does not create a tax obligation for the recipient.

What are Félix's transfer limits to Mexico?

Once you know the regulatory thresholds, the limits of the service you choose determine how much you can send in practice. Félix's limits depend on whether or not you have completed identity verification. Verifying yourself is a one-step, free process, and in most cases, it takes minutes.

LevelDaily limitMonthly limitSix-month limit
Unverified$1,500 USD$2,999 USD$9,999 USD
Verified$2,999 USD$9,999 USD$30,000 USD

To get verified, you need a valid ID (passport, national ID, consular ID, or U.S. driver's license) and a selfie. Once verified, your status is permanent and you do not need to repeat the process.

How do you pay for your transfer with Félix?

You can pay with a U.S.-issued debit card or credit card (except American Express) via the payment link Félix sends you on WhatsApp. If you prefer to pay with cash, you can do so at stores like Walmart, 7-Eleven, CVS, or Walgreens using a barcode generated in the chat. Limits for in-store cash payments are different: a maximum of $500 per transaction, $1,500 per day, and $5,000 per month.

The Félix fee for transfers to Mexico is a flat $2.99 for bank deposits, with no variable commissions or hidden fees based on the amount.

‍

How do you send money to Mexico with Félix via WhatsApp?

Félix works entirely through WhatsApp, with no additional apps or U.S. bank accounts required. The entire process takes less than five minutes:

  2. Complete identity verification with your ID and a selfie (a one-time, single-step process).
  3. Provide the beneficiary's name, the amount, and whether they want to receive it via bank deposit or cash pickup.
  4. Pay with your card or in cash at a store using the barcode Félix generates.
  5. Your family member receives the money in minutes in their bank account, or in minutes in most cases if they choose cash.

The first time you register a beneficiary, Félix saves their details. Subsequent transfers to that same person are even faster.

Frequently asked questions about remittance limits to Mexico

Can I send more than $2,999 in one day if I make multiple transfers?

No. The $2,999 daily limit applies to the total of all transfers made in a single day for verified users. If you need to send more, you can do so on different days within the $9,999 monthly limit.

What happens if I send money and exceed the limit without realizing it?

The Félix system does not allow you to complete a transaction that exceeds your current limit. The transfer simply will not go through, and Félix will notify you via WhatsApp.

Are remittances received by my family member in Mexico subject to taxes?

In most cases, no. Remittances between family members are not considered taxable income under the Income Tax Law (ISR) in Mexico. However, if the amounts are large, the bank may report them to the SAT. Read more at Do remittances pay taxes?.

What documents does Félix accept to verify my identity?

A passport, national ID, consular ID, or U.S. driver's license, along with a selfie. You do not need a Social Security Number (SSN) to send money. In some cases, Félix may ask for a tax identification number.
