Studying in the United States is a great option for anyone looking to access a high-level educational system. The vast range of educational opportunities offered by U.S. universities allows students to specialize in many diverse fields and sciences.

‍

Studying in the United States

The United States has more than 4,000 universities located throughout the country, and many of them are ranked among the best in the world. Furthermore, the educational system is flexible, which allows for greater freedom when choosing which classes to take.

Part of the experience of studying in the U.S. is on-campus university life, something that does not exist in many other countries. Campuses can house up to 50,000 students and feature housing, dining halls, sports teams, and many other activities.

Degree programs in the United States

There are various institutions within the U.S. higher education system. On one hand, there are community colleges, which offer 2-year programs. On the other hand, there are **undergraduate degrees**, which are 4-year programs, and finally, there are graduate programs.

Community College

With their 2-year programs, community colleges award Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees. Some also offer more technical or vocational educational options.

These institutions provide their students with academic credits toward a bachelor's degree. Thanks to agreements they have with standard universities, these credits and degrees can be transferred to continue undergraduate studies at a university.

Undergraduate Degree

Undergraduate programs offer a huge diversity of subjects, as they base their curricula on the arts and sciences. Each class or subject provides a certain number of credits, and these credits are necessary to obtain a bachelor's degree. Credits correspond to the hours spent in class.

Graduate Degree

Graduate programs in the United States primarily offer master's and doctoral degrees. The academic path includes **research and academic work**. Across the country, there are around 1,000 universities that offer graduate programs.

‍

Scholarships to study in the United States

The United States offers a vast number of scholarships aimed at young people and students of all kinds. The **Fulbright Scholarship** is geared toward graduate and master's students to pursue work in the field of research.

The **Kotzen Scholarship** is offered by Simmons University in Boston, which seeks undergraduate students and offers up to $3,000 USD to support research. On the other hand, the Stamps Scholarships granted by the University of Miami are for students who want to study in the United States and lack the financial means.

Requirements for a U.S. student visa

The most common visas for students are the **F-1**, intended for international students pursuing academic studies, and the **M-1** which is intended for international students studying vocational training programs. On the other hand, if the study program is part of an exchange program, the chosen visa is the J-1.**

How to apply for a student visa

To apply for a student visa, you must enroll in a school that is part of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). Once accepted, you will need to register in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and pay the fee.

The school will issue the Form I-20. After completing it, you can apply for the visa at the nearest embassy or consulate. Finally, you must complete Form DS-160 and schedule an interview appointment.

The documents you must bring to your appointment are:

  • documents proving you meet the minimum academic or career requirements,
  • documents showing how you will cover your education and living expenses,
  • documents proving your intent to leave the U.S. once your studies are complete.
