It is common for many migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in a country where they intend to settle permanently to resort to irregular migration, exposing themselves to a series of dangers during their journey and to the immigration restrictions imposed in the destination country.

In the Americas, this happens very frequently due to the flow of people coming from all over Latin America toward Mexico and the United States.

However, a large number of these individuals are willing to obtain immigration regularization in the destination nation in order to settle legally and engage in opportunities to start businesses, find employment, or benefit from the local education system.

‍

**What is immigration regularization?**

Immigration regularization is a policy-based response issued by the State to the arrival of large groups of irregular migrants residing in a given country.

With immigration regularization, those who have suddenly arrived in the territory can stabilize their legal immigration status, preventing third parties from exploiting migrants for labor. Meanwhile, these individuals can weaken the underground economy, contribute to state social security, increase tax revenue, and avoid deportation.

How is it obtained?

In the case of Mexico, immigration regularization can be obtained in different ways: as a regional visitor, as a border worker visitor, and through family ties.

Immigration regularization as a regional visitor allows for a stay in Mexico for a period not exceeding 7 days in the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Chiapas.

The interested party is given a free card to certify this benefit, which is valid for 5 years and does not allow for paid activities.

Meanwhile, immigration regularization for visitors for humanitarian reasons is valid for one year and is granted to the interested party if they are a victim or witness of a crime committed in Mexico, if they are an unaccompanied migrant minor, or upon request for political asylum, recognition of refugee status, or protection by the Mexican State until their situation is resolved.

Before submitting any application, remember to consult with an attorney specializing in immigration procedures and rights regarding the different options available to you.

**Immigration regularization through family ties**

Immigration regularization through family ties is designed for foreigners in an irregular immigration situation who have a connection to a Mexican citizen or any foreigner residing in the national territory.
