5 things you should check before sending money from the U.S.

Send money home

Your first transfer is free and arrives in seconds

Most people sending money to Latin America only look at the fee. They open the app, see "$2.99" or "$4.99," and assume that's all the service takes. That isn't always the case.

The fee charged by a money transfer service is only part of the real cost. The exchange margin—what the provider deducts from the market exchange rate—can cost more than the fee on transfers over $100.

Before your next transfer, check these five points. They are what truly determine how much your family member receives.

‍

Before sending money from the U.S., compare the exchange rate, not just the fee

The Fee is the fixed charge that appears on the screen. The Exchange margin is what the provider quietly keeps by applying an Exchange rate lower than the real market rate.

Imagine the market exchange rate today is 17.50 pesos per dollar. If the service you use applies 17.00, that difference of 0.50 pesos per dollar is multiplied by every dollar you send. On a $300 transfer, that's 150 pesos less for your family member—more than what most services charge in fees.

How to compare the total cost of a transfer:

Enter the same amount into two or three different services and look at the exact amount your family member will receive on the other end, not the fee in the header. The service that shows the highest number at the destination is the cheapest in real terms, regardless of its stated fee.

To understand how the exchange margin works in detail, read Exchange rates and remittances: why you lose more money than you think when sending.

‍

Check the delivery method: not all money transfers arrive the same way or on time

The same service can have very different delivery times and processes depending on how your family member receives the money. Choosing the wrong method could mean your family member waits for hours when they could have had the money in minutes.

Bank account:

In most cases, the money arrives in minutes directly to the beneficiary's bank account. It is the most convenient method when your family member has an active bank account, because they don't have to go anywhere.

Cash pickup:

If your family member does not have a bank account or needs the money in cash, pickup at an agency or payment point is usually available in minutes in most cases. It requires them to go to the authorized location with their ID.

Digital wallet (available with some providers):

The money arrives directly to apps like Mercado Pago or other wallets available in the destination country. Convenient if your family member already uses those platforms.

Before sending, confirm that your family member knows exactly how they will receive the money and that they have everything necessary (active account, ID, access to the payment point) to avoid delays on the other end.

Know the transfer limits so you don't delay your transfer

All remittance services have transaction, daily, and monthly limits. If you don't know them before sending, you might find your transfer on hold or rejected exactly when you need it most.

Limits vary based on your account's verification level. At Félix, for example, an unverified account has a daily limit of $1,500 and a monthly limit of $2,999. By verifying your identity with a valid ID (passport, national ID, consular ID, or U.S. driver's license) and a selfie, the daily limit increases to $2,999 and the monthly limit to $9,999. Verification is a one-time process and is usually completed in minutes.

At Félix, verifying your identity with a valid ID increases your sending limits: from $1,500 to $2,999 daily and from $2,999 to $9,999 monthly. Verification is done only once and is permanent.

If you plan to make a large transfer or several in the same month, verify your account in advance. Check the updated limits at What are the money transfer limits at Félix Pago?

Protect yourself from scams when sending money: signs you should know

Scams targeting people who send remittances have grown, and many impersonate well-known financial services. Knowing the signs helps you avoid falling for them.

WhatsApp accounts impersonating real services:

A common tactic is to create a WhatsApp number with a name and photo similar to those of a legitimate service. They contact you, offer a special rate, or tell you there is a problem with your transfer, and ask for account details or for you to make a payment outside the official channel.

Signs of fraud you should recognize:

  • They ask for passwords, verification codes, or your card details
  • They offer rates or discounts that are not available on the official platform
  • They pressure you to act urgently before verifying
  • The account number or name is similar to the official one but not exact (for example, "@felix_pago1" instead of the official number)

In the case of Félix, the only official WhatsApp number is +1 (669) 333-3549, and it has active account verification (blue checkmark). Félix will never ask you for passwords or payments outside of that chat. If you receive a suspicious message, read How do I know if a social media or WhatsApp chat is official from Félix Pago? before responding to anything.
